Artist Statement 2023–2024

My art is about capturing the energy of moments—especially the way music and visual art can collide and spark something unexpected. I work with watercolor, colored pencils, and oils because they let me move quickly, almost like I’m chasing a feeling before it disappears. I want my pieces to feel alive, like they’re still in motion when someone looks at them.

I don’t plan much when I start. Instead, I let the brush and colors lead the way. It’s a bit like improvisation—I make marks, see where they take me, and build from there. This approach comes from my time studying Russian folk ornamental painting, where I learned to love the rhythm of lines and how they can carry emotion.

Sometimes, I’ll see shapes or patterns in the chaos of my initial strokes, and I’ll follow those hints to see where they go. It’s a process of discovery, layering colors and textures until the piece feels complete.

I’m always experimenting—switching between canvas, watercolor, wire, yarn, even clay. Each material brings something new, and I love how they push me to think differently.

Themes like freedom versus limits, the emotional pull of color, and the act of wandering and observing the world (like a flâneur) keep showing up in my work. For me, art is about exploring these ideas and sharing the way they resonate with me.
